There are a few steps in balancing a chemical equation, first you need to either have an unbalanced equation or you must make one from a word problem. Balancing a chemical equation means adding coefficients to the beginning of the chemical formulas of the reactants and the products to conform to the law of conservation of mass.
Coefficients MUST be whole numbers and as small as possible.
New substances cannot be added and existing ones cannot be removed.
Subscripts may not be changed
Steps:
1) Write the unbalanced equation
-Reactants on the left and products on the right side of the equation.
2) Balance the equation.
-Get the same number of atoms of every element on each side of the equation.
-Once one element is balanced, proceed to balance another, and another, until all elements are balanced.
-Balance chemical formulas by placing coefficients in front of them. Do not add subscript.
3) Indicate the states of matter of the reactants and products.
Put in proper subscripts after everything is balanced. Gas (g), Solid (s), Liquid (l) and Aqueous(aq) which is a solution in water
